The diagnosis of Parkinson’s created such a feeling of isolation. Even though my family is very supportive and understanding, there is a certain sense of “aloneness” that I felt until I discovered Parkinson’s Community Fitness. From the very first day I walked in, I have felt such a part of this community. The greeters at the desk always remember our names and greet us with a smile. The instructors, all of whom bring a wealth of training, each bring something a little different and special through their own personalities. Although we are all experiencing issues related to this large umbrella term of PD, when we come together at PCF we find we can discuss our concerns with each other before and after classes, during breaks, and in special groups such as Girl Talk. More than once I have heard others say, (and I also have this feeling), “Where else could we discuss some of these very personal concerns and feelings so openly?” The atmosphere is always light and friendly, and it is so comforting to know that this is a place where we can work to slow the progression of our conditions, problem solve with those who understand, and laugh in the process. I always feel better when I leave.
After being diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, my first thought was, “Ok, now what do I need to do?” My doctor gave me a sheet of paper with resources listed. Thank God PCF was on the list! I have never experienced a warmer welcome than the one I received at PCF. The people, trainers, staff, volunteers and many resources are the reason I am absolutely thriving, in spite of this disease that takes so much away from individuals who have it. I have made life-long friends and am thankful for every day I get to be there!
When I received the diagnosis of Parkinson’s, I was angry and devastated. I now know that the diagnosis was really a blessing. “When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade.” PCF is my “lemonade.” I enjoy the classes that address the fitness levels of all PD patients, but PCF offers so much more than exercise. From my first class, I was welcomed by both staff and other members and felt like I fit in. I’ve met so many great people and made so many friends who encourage and inspire me to come often. The staff is constantly planning educational and social events throughout the year. I am blessed to have PCF. It has made me begin living and see what is most important to me
I wasn’t sure what PCF was when I entered the doors nearly 6 years ago. Like most newly diagnosed people with Parkinson’s, I had done lots of internet research and knew that I needed to work on physical strength, coordination, balance, plus cognitive abilities and speech. Well, PCF is a “one stop shop” for Parkinson’s support! They have classes for strength, coordination, balance, stretching, yoga, music movement, speech, and hand dexterity. Also available are support groups for people with PD, and their care partners. There are regular educational and social events, often with lunch provided. Finally, the most important aspect is I became part of a supportive, accepting community.
I feel so blessed to be a member of PCF! I know how important exercise is for people with Parkinson’s disease. PCF provides me with exercise classes that are just right for my fitness level. The instructors make the classes so much fun! It has become a part of my daily routine as I like to go every day. It is such an uplifting place and everyone really cares about each other. I have developed so many wonderful friendships with the staff and other members. I look forward to seeing these supportive friends each day!
First, I want to say how much I have enjoyed being a member of Parkinson Community Fitness. I have always felt welcomed by the friendly staff as well as the members. The exercises are formatted to the needs of people with PD. In addition to classes, there are extra educational and social activities which help keep members involved in interacting with each other in an enjoyable environment. Finally, the membership fee is a real bargain!
Parkinson’s Community Fitness has been a game changer for me. After getting over the initial shock of the diagnosis I started looking for what to do about it. The PCF community showed me not only the practical steps I can do to address the condition but also not to be afraid of Parkinson’s. The spirit, friendliness, courage and companionship shown by all the folks at PCF is both a comfort and inspiration to me.
